Purpose
The aim of this course is to train a person to be capable of managing an emergency situation and providing immediate first aid in order to preserve life, promote recovery and prevent the casualty’s condition from worsening.
This is a comprehensive scenario based course that is tailored to workplace situations. It is recommended that this course is conducted onsite to create contextualised first aid scenarios.
COMPULSORY PRE-LEARNING:
Candidates MUST complete the online pre-learn assessment prior to the course. The online pre-learn assessment certificate will be available to you when you complete the online assessment. You will need to bring the certificate to your face-to-face training and assessment in either hard copy of electronic format.
If candidates does not complete their online pre-learn assessment prior to the face-to-face practical training and assessment course there are two options:
1. Candidate can stay and attend the face-to-face practical training and assessment course then be issued a non-unit standard based certificate upon successful completion. CANDIDATE WILL NOT BE AWARDED THE NZQA UNIT STANDARDS.
2. Candidate can leave the course and contact a VHNZ representative to re-book onto a later course date. There will be no refund and the new booking will incur full rebooking cost.
Course Objectives
The course contains online theory and face to face practical assessments covering the following topics:
- Overview of HSW regulations relating to accidents in the workplace
- Scene assessment and management
- Primary assessment
- CPR - adult/child/infant
- AED use and practice
- Choking - adult/child/infant – conscious and unconscious
- Shock and the recovery position.
TRAUMA TOPICS
- External and internal bleeding
- Basic wound care
- Burns and scalds
- Fractures and dislocations
- Head, neck and spinal injuries
- Soft tissue injuries – sprains and strains
- Thermal conditions – hypothermia & hyperthermia
MEDICAL TOPICS
- Breathing difficulties
- Dealing with asthma casualties
- Dealing with heart attack casualties
- Heart conditions
- Neurological - stroke and seizures
- Allergies and anaphylactic shock.
NZQA Unit Standards
6401 Provide basic first aid
6402 Provide basic life support
6400 Manage first aid in an emergency situation

Course Duration
Complete your compulsory online first aid pre-learn quiz prior to the course then attend your 8 hour face-to-face practical training and assessment (candidate to attend full day classroom based session)
