Purpose
Permit to Work (PTW) Systems are a safe system of work used in many industries for managing and authorising non-routine high risk work activities. PTW ensures that the hazards and risks associated with such work are identified and assessed, and the appropriate control measures implemented to manage (eliminate or minimise) risks to health and safety. The aim of this course is to enable a successful trainee to be able to identify the requirement for, and issue the appropriate type of permit (or permits) for the work activity to proceed.
Course Objectives
At the successful completion of this course the trainee will be able to:
- Explain work permit procedures and requirements
- Ensure the need for a work permit is properly identified and the worksite is prepared accordingly
- Issue a work permit
- Monitor and close the work permit; and audit work permits.

Entry Criteria
The Permit Issuer course requires trainees to demonstrate a level of written and spoken English equivalent to Level 3 English communication skills, as trainees must be able to read and interpret PTW documentation, including Health and Safety legislation, and the various permit types and their supporting documentation.
It is recommended that trainees complete unit standards 30265 v2 Apply health and safety risk assessments to a job role and 17588 v5 Apply for, accept, and carry out work according to a work permit in the workplace before attending this course. Competency in other task-specific work activities, such as Working at Height, Confined Spaces, Lockout Tagout, etc. will enable successful trainees to issue work permits for those specific activities.less
