Purpose
The aim of this course is to train a person to be capable of providing immediate first aid in an emergency situation in order to preserve life, promote recovery and prevent the casualty's condition from worsening. We suggest this level 1 course to those who already have industry safety rescue components built into other training.
COMPULSORY PRE-LEARNING:
IMPORTANT: You MUST complete the online pre-learn assessment prior to the course. You can access a pre-learn completion certificate when you have passed the on-line pre-learn assessment. You must take the certificate with you to your course in hard copy or electronic form.
If you do not complete the on-line pre-learn assessment prior to the course, there are two options:
1. You can complete the course and receive a non-unit standard based certificate. YOU WILL NOT BE AWARDED THE UNIT STANDARDS
2. You can leave the course and contact a VHNZ representative to re-book onto a later course date. There will be no refund and full course fees will be charged for the new booking.

- Overview of HSW regulations relating to accidents in the workplace
- Approaching an accident scene - hazard management
- Primary assessment - workplace specific
- CPR - adult/child/infant
- Choking - adult/child/infant
- AED operation
- Soft tissue injuries - sprains and strains
TRAUMA TOPICS
- Shock and the recovery position
- External and internal bleeding
- Burns and scalds
- Fractures and dislocations
MEDICAL TOPICS
- Breathing difficulties
- Heart conditions
- Stroke and seizures
- Allergies and anaphylaxis
NZQA Unit Standards
6401 - Provide basic first aid
6402 - Provide basic life support
Pre-Requisite
Pre-requisite for 6401: 6402 - Provide basic life support
First Aid Refresher: Candidates MUST hold previous first aid certification (within 2 years).
Course Duration
Compulsory online first aid pre-learn quiz + 4 hour face-to-face practical training and assessment.
