Purpose
Before embarking as a crew member on-board a commercial vessel, such as cruise ships, yachts and merchant vessels over 200T, it is now mandatory to complete a series of short courses known as STCW Basic Safety Training or STCW Basic Courses. The STCW Basic Training programme is a practical marine course covering water safety and rescue.
This course covers the requirements needed to work on ships throughout the world including Super Yachts.
Course Outline
Fire Prevention and Firefighting (FPFF) - 2.5 days: A theory and practical based course ensures crew responding to fires understands the of fire dynamics, fire prevention systems available, and maintaining a state of readiness to respond to the various types of fire classes.
Elementary First Aid (EFA) - 1.5 days: A practical and theory based course, examining common medical emergencies that can occur on-board, including CPR. Includes NZQA unit standards 6401, 6402 and 6400.
Personal Survival Techniques (PST) - 2 days: A theory and swimming pool based practical course. Crew members learn the principals of survival sea, actions to be taken when called to survival craft, dangers to survivors, and equipment available
Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR) - 1 day: A theory based course. Knowledge of types of vessels, observe safe working practices on-board, types of emergencies, human relationships, and ways to prevent pollution on-board.
Security Awareness - 4 hours:Security on board and security threats.
Basic Training
Basic training includes PSSR, EFA, PST, FPFF, SA and are normally delivered together. However, the courses can be delivered separately if required.
Crowd Management Training can be added to this course if required. This is required for all crew members with a duty to assist passengers on board ships - ie. Cook Strait Ferries and Cruise Ships. Minimum of 10 trainees required to confirm this addition, and will add 1 extra day to the course duration.
Entry Criteria
- Trainees must be able to swim unaided for 25m and be able to float unaided for 60 seconds.

- A current seafarers medical certificate or a completed VHNZ medical form Download Form
Refresher
Personal Survival Techniques (PST), Crowd Manaement Training (CMT) and Fire Prevention and Firefighting Techniques (FPFF) require refresher training every FIVE years
